(August 2, 1923 - July 20, 2008)

Luther E. Okland, 84, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his home in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Luther Edwin Okland was born on August 2, 1923, near Lake Mills in Winnebago County, Iowa, the son of S. T. and Christina (Solomonson) Okland. He attended country school near Leland and graduated from Leland High School with the “Class of 1941”. He married Ruby V. Carlson on April 28, 1942, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Leland, Iowa.

From 1944 to 1946, Luther served his country in the United States Army. For his actions in the Pacific Theater, Okinawa, he was awarded both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

After farming for many years, Luther was, then, employed at Lake Mills Graphic Publishing Company.

He is survived by his loving children, Raymond Okland, of Houston, Texas, Jayne (Jim) Edwards, of Sioux City, Iowa, Jeanne (Richard) Duben, of Forestville, California, Jennie (Steve) Woerner, of Spring, Texas, and Scott Okland, of San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren, Thomas (Becky) Edwards, of Yutan, Nebraska, David (Jennifer) Edwards, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Angela (Raye) Farquhar, of Maysville, Georgia, Valeri Okland, of Houston, Texas, Wade (Lisa) Okland, of Conroe, Texas, Ryan (Kisha) Kloster, of Houston, Texas, Sara (Patrick) Landels, of Huffman, Texas, Laura Kloster, of Conroe, Texas, and Daniel Okland, of Hondo, Texas; ten great grandchildren, Jill, Cole, Kelsey, Cade, Jack and Carson Edwards, Reese Farquhar, and Jackson, Alexis, and Gunnar Okland; a brother Lloyd (Margaret) Okland, of Lake Mills, Iowa; his sisters, Ruth (Arlin) Zingg, of Leland, Iowa, and Ruby Butler, of Des Moines, Iowa; two foreign exchange students, Hendrick Haase from Germany (1972 to 1973) and Arto Forsten, from Finland (1974 to 1975); along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby V. (Carlson); his son, Vernon, killed in action in Vietnam in 1970; and seven brothers and sisters: Theodore, Adolph, John, Selma, Stanley, Arlene and Wallace; along with two infant grandsons.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM, Thursday, July 24, 2008, at the Center Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills, Iowa, with Rev. Thomas Rank officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday evening, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills, Iowa, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at Center Evangelical Cemetery in rural Lake Mills, Iowa. Military Rites will be conducted by Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post #235 and VFW Post #6161 Leland, Iowa.
