Mary F. Kreis
January 19, 1941 - January 9, 2010

FERTILE - Mary Frances Kreis, age 68, of Fertile, died on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

The daughter of Raymond and Vivian (Cegon) Kreis, Mary was born on January 19, 1941, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She grew up in Minneapolis and attended the Basilica of St. Mary’s school from the first to the eighth grade. Then, she attended Hosterman Junior High until 1957. In 1956, she worked for Texas Bill Strength’s record shop on Marquette Avenue in Minneapolis, a position which she found very exciting because it allowed her to meet many county music stars.

In October, 1958, Mary married Dan Uzalac with whom she had three children: Kevin Ray, Michael Dean, and Darren (Patrick) Joseph Uzalac. They resided in Minneapolis before moving to New Hope in 1960. In 1970, the couple divorced.

Mary worked at Honeywell from 1959 to 1961 and then at Montgomery Ward’s from 1971 to 1973. In 1973, she started at Robert Halls & Dana’s in Crystal, Minnesota. In 1979, she married Marcus S. Lovik. The couple resided in Crystal, Minnesota, where Mary worked at Nortronics until 1984. Together they had one child, Holly Lynn Lovik. In 1983, they decided to move to Iowa.

In Iowa, Mary worked at the Good Samaritan Day Care, and in 1990, she decided to work at Winnebago Industries in Forest City. She left Winnebago in 2006 so she could care for Marcus.

In November 2009, Mary was diagnosed with lung cancer. During the next month, she underwent back surgery as well as radiation and chemotherapy treatments, all with a fighting attitude. On January 2, 2010, she developed complications and was admitted to the hospital. She, later, was transferred to the Muse Norris Hospice Unit where she passed away surrounded by family and close friends.

Mary especially liked her trips to Hawaii in 1995 and Orlando, Florida, in 2009. Most of all, however, she enjoyed gardening, playing cards, going to the movies, walking, visiting with friends, going out to eat, and taking small trips to see her grandchildren in Minnesota. A very caring person, she always put others first. Known for her famous meatballs and meatloaf, she was always willing to feed anyone in her home. She also loved her animals, Muffin, her miniature Schnauzer, and her cats, Miz, Ben, and Boots. Also known for her straightforward attitude, she would never hesitate to say what was on her mind.

Mary is survived by her children: Kevin (Lisa), Michael (Maryna), and Pat Uzalac and Holly Lovik; her grandchildren, Ashley, Brittany, Lea, Savannah, Erika, Lexi, Julia, Christie, and Stephanie; four “furry” grandchildren: Mack, Giz, Roo, and Lynx; a close friend, Earl Kilen; her “special niece,” Sheyanne Schultz, and her husband, Stanley, and son, Ethan; and her cousins, Bruce (Elsie) Tuholsky, and Sandy (Dan) Deering, as well as many wonderful friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Vivian and Ray Kreis, and her husband, Marcus Lovik.

Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, January 14, 2010, at the Fertile Lutheran Church with Lay Pastor David Halverson officiating. Inurnment will be in the spring at Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N Clark St., Forest City, and will continue an hour prior to services at the church.
