June 8, 1926 - October 30, 2006Edward Joseph Dean, age 80, of Forest City, died on Monday, October 30, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Edward Dean was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on June 8, 1926, the only child of Edward F. and Elizabeth M. Dean. While in high school, he participated in the ROTC program. Afterwards, he attended Yale University where he was the goalie for the Yale Lacrosse team and graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree. During World War II, he served in the US Navy.
On July 23, 1949, Edward married Elizabeth “Betty” Bunting. They had three children, Kathryn, David, and Maryellen.
Edward worked for Crane Packing Company for forty-eight years, first as a salesman in Chicago, Kansas City, and Boston and then as Vice President of Manufacturing in Chicago.
He had a brilliant photogenic mind, was an avid reader, and loved doing crossword puzzles. He loved salmon/trout fishing, and for thirty years, he considered himself a fishing guide on the Connecticut Lakes in New Hampshire. Always interested in airplanes, he earned a pilot’s license. He enjoyed listening to music, playing many rounds of golf, and watching sports on TV, especially football.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” (Bunting) Dean, of Forest City, Iowa, formerly of Wilmette, Illinois; his daughters, Kathryn (Rod) Barkema, of Forest City, Iowa, Maryellen Dean, of Rushford, Minnesota, and one son, David (Diana) Dean, of West Linn, Oregon; two grandsons, Daniel Dean, of Monmouth, Oregon, and Jonathan Dean, of West Linn, Oregon; one brother-in-law, John T. Bunting, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; a niece, Mary Jane McGinnis; and a nephew, Tom Bunting.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters-in-law, Mary J. Bunting and Madeleine Bunting.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Friday, November 3, 2006, at 10:30 AM at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City with Fr. Henry Huber officiating. Burial will be at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Forest City. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, November 2, 2006, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and an hour prior to services at the church.
