Genevieve Folven, 93, passed away early Wednesday, May 2, 2012. Born on March 28, 1919, in Lake Mills, Iowa, the daughter of John and Anna (Twedt) Moe, she graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1937. On August 19, 1939 she married Omer Folven in Scarville, Iowa. Gen worked while Omer attended Luther College and was stationed at Camp Upton, Long Island, New York, during World War II. The family lived in Ackley, Iowa, and Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, before purchasing a farm in Austin, Minnesota.
Known for providing guests with great meals and friendship, Gen enjoyed life on the farm. She focused much of her life on raising her five children, and she always attended their sporting events and other activities. She loved to fish and travel, but she especially enjoyed family vacations at the lake, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. In 1994, she and Omer sold their farm and moved to Albert Lea, splitting their time between their cabin on Burnt Shanty Lake near Grand Rapids and their condo in Albert Lea. They spent seventy-two years together before Omer's death in 2011.
Genevieve is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Omer Folven; one brother; and four sisters.
She is survived by her children, Roger (Judy) Folven, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Jon (Marcia) Folven, of Oshkosh Wisconsin, Craig (Kathy) Folven, of St. Francis, Minnesota, Deb (Mike) Smith, of Rochester, and Tammy (Tony) Kimball, of Crosby, Minnesota; her grandchildren, Sally (Kelly) Wheeler, SuEllen Birkholz, Beth (Ashvin) Ragoowansi, Angella (Mike) Dennis, Derek (Niki), Jeffrey, and Kenneth (Nicolle) Folven, Kari (John) Lazarescu, Katie (Devlin) Roy, Jennifer (Kevin) Beier, Heather (Shane) Undeberg, Michael (Theresa) Schaefer, and Nicholas, Kendra, and Kayla Kimball; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Maxine Nelson; her sisters-in-law, Gladys Rowe and Janet (Carlyle) Engebretson, both of Albert Lea; and a brother-in-law, Vernon (Sharron) Folven of Kiester.
The memorial service for Genevieve "Gen" Violet Folven will be held on Monday, May 7, 2012, at 11:00 AM at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, the Reverend John Holt officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2012, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea, as well as one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Kiester, Minnesota [rural Thompson, Winnebago County, Iowa].
