Ruth Elvebak, 96, of Kiester, Minnesota, died Sunday, March 4, 2012, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Blue Earth.

Ruth was born on October 2, 1914, the eighth of nine children born to Andrew and Dena (Johnson) Elvebak in Eden Township, Winnebago County, Iowa. She graduated from Bricelyn High School in 1931 and attended art school in Des Moines, Iowa, for photo retouching. A portrait artist, she, subsequently, graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago. During her career, she did many portraits in Chicago, New Orleans, Ohio, Mexico, and Minneapolis as well as many others for members of her family. As a WAC in the U.S. Army between 1944 and 1946, she became an X-ray Technician. In the 1950s, she had her own art studio in Minneapolis called Anders Gallery.

Ruth is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Martin (Helen), David (Sara), Leonard (Edith), and Alfred Elvebak; four sisters: Alvina (Ernest) Wipplinger, Margaret (Leo) George, Sarah (Lee) Showalter, and Ellen (David) Scherb.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 9, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Kiester [rural Thompson, Winnebago County, Iowa]. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Chris Fiske will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. The Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, Minnesota, is in charge of the arrangements.
