(October 4, 1928 - December 16, 2012)A former longtime resident of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Jean Breckunitch, age 84, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society in Olathe, Kansas.
Jean was born on October 4, 1928, in Brandt, South Dakota, to Clarence and Mabel Levins. After graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1946, she furthered her education, earning a degree at South Dakota State University School of Pharmacy in 1950. She, then, moved to Buffalo Center where she started her career and family.
Jean married Carl Breckunitch on November 23, 1953. She and Carl were happily married for forty-eight years until he passed away in 2001. Jean loved reading, gardening, and watching Jeopardy and sporting events. Most of all, however, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Active in her career, Jean worked at the Beste Pharmacy in Buffalo Center until 1959. After a briefly working at the Fairmont Hospital and then at the Fairmont Sentential, she began a fulfilling career as a librarian, from which she retired in 2000.
Jean also took part in community activities including the Girl Scouts, The V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and St. Patrick's Altar Society.
Jean is lovingly remembered by her children: Patrick (Majel) Breckunitch, of Sedgwick, Kansas, Carla (Jim) Mitchell, of Fayette, Iowa, and Janet (Brad) Bachofer, of Olathe, Kansas; her grandchildren: Kelly and Kirstie Breckunitch, Kevin (Beth), Jennifer, and Clarissa Mitchell, and Anne Bachofer; her great-grandchildren: Felicity, Perpetua, and Abigail Jean Mitchell and Brooks Mitchell Birdsell; and her siblings: Margery (Mike) Ahern, Eileen (Dennis) Tekrony, and Richard (Sandy) Levins; as well as by many nieces and nephews, other family members, and friends.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents; and an infant brother.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 20, 2012, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Buffalo Center with Father Paul Lippstock officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday from 4:00-6:00 PM at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
