Omer J. Folven, 91, died Tuesday morning, March 1, 2011, at the Thorne Crest Retirement Center in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Omer was born on March 9, 1919, near Kiester, Minnesota, the son of Gilbert and Alma (Fure) Folven. Confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiester, Minnesota [rural Thompson, Winnebago County, Iowa], he graduated from high school in Rake, Iowa, and then attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, on an athletic scholarship. He played both baseball and football for Luther College. Subsequently, he played baseball in the Southern Minnesota League with the Owatonna Indians and later with the Austin Packers.
After graduating from college, Omer taught public school in Ackley, Iowa, and then in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, for six years. He enjoyed coaching high school sports. On August 19, 1939, he married Genevieve Moe in Scarville, Iowa. Stationed at Camp Upton, Long Island, New York, during World War II, he served in the Army Medical Corp.
Eventually, he and Gen purchased a farm near Austin, Minnesota, where he farmed and worked for the Hormel Company for over thirty-five years. He enjoyed traveling, spending time at his cabin near Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and attending his kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events. He was currently a member of the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.
Omer is survived by his wife, Genevieve, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; his children: Roger, and his wife, Judy Folven, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Jon, and his wife, Marcia Folven, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Craig, and his wife, Kathy Folven, of St. Francis, Minnesota, Deb, and her husband, Mike Smith, of Rochester, Minnesota, and Tammy, and her husband, Tony Kimball, of Crosby, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Sally (Kelly) Wheeler, SuEllen Birkholz, Beth (Ashvin) Ragoowansi, Angela (Mike) Dennis, Derek (Nikki), Jeffrey, and Kenneth (Nicolle) Folven, Kari (John) Lazarescu, Katie (Devlin) Roy, Jennifer (Kevin) Beier, Heather (Shane) Undeberg, Michael (Theresa) Schaefer, and Nicholas Kimball, Kendra, and Kayla Kimball; twenty-seven great grandchildren; his brothers and sisters: Betty (Alonzo) Johnson, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Gladys Roe, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Janet (Carlyle) Engebretson, of Kiester, Minnesota, and Vernon (Sharon) Folven, of Kiester, Minnesota. Omer was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Folven.
Memorial services for Omer J. Folven of Albert Lea, Minnesota, will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Pastor Dan Baker will officiate. Visitation will be held Monday, March 7, 2011, from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Bonnerup Funeral Service, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Kiester, Minnesota. Military honors will be accorded by the Albert Lea Area Veterans Organizations.
