Erling E. Twedt
(August 21, 1929 - December 1, 2012)

Erling Emil Twedt, age 83, of Lake Mills, died Saturday, December 1, 2012, at Wealshire Assisted Living in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Erling was born on August 21, 1929, on a farm near Walters, Minnesota, the son of Emil and Mildred (Husby) Twedt. He attended school in Frost, Minnesota, and later joined the U.S. Air Force toward the end of the Korean Conflict. While stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, he met Helen M. Twedt, whom he married on March 1, 1952. Shortly after their wedding, they were sent to Tokyo, Japan, where they remained until they were discharged.

After completing their military service, Erling brought Helen from southeast Tennessee to southern Minnesota where he began farming. In 1963, he began his insurance career with Farm Bureau. In time, he became the agency manager for both the Winnebago and Worth County offices. In 1969, he moved his family to Lake Mills where he later established an independent agency, Twedt Insurance and Real Estate. He continued in this business for the remainder of his career. He proudly served on numerous boards and councils, including both the Lake Mills School Board and the Lake Mills City Council.

An avid hunter, Erling also loved to fish and considered himself quite a gardener as well. He continually fussed over his melons, pumpkins, gourds, and vegetables, always growing enough to share with many friends and neighbors. His family's pantry was always filled with the summer’s harvest.

Those left to share their memories of him include three sons, Joel (Carol) Twedt, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Edwin Twedt, of Ames, Iowa, and James (Penny) Twedt, of Urbandale, Iowa; his five grandchildren, Lesley (Ben) Setterlund, Matthew (Paula) Twedt, Emily Twedt, Betsy Twedt, and Katie Twedt; one sister, Maxine Olson, of Blue Earth, Minnesota, and one brother, Marion Twedt, of Frost, Minnesota.

Erling was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his beloved daughter, Karen; his parents; and his sister, Edna Anderson.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, December 7, 2012, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Denise M. Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills, with military honors conducted by the Otto Chose Post #235.
