Lyle Gerald Gettis
(June 6, 1923 - October 7, 2012)Lyle G. Gettis, age 89, of Lake Mills, died Sunday, October 07, 2012, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea, Minnesota.
Lyle Gerald Gettis was born on June 6, 1923, on a farm near Leland, Iowa, to Milton “Charlie” and Anna (Johnson) Gettis. He attended country school in Winnebago County and farmed with his dad until he enlisted in the United States Navy. After returning from his service during WWII, Lyle worked at various occupations from farming, heavy construction, and factory work, but he also continued working at his lawn care and snow removal business for more than fifty years. He recently retired for health reasons.
On September 3, 1955, Lyle married Erma Ahlfs at Calvary Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake, Iowa. Over the years, they made their home in various places in North Central Iowa.
Lyle was a member of Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church, rural Joice, and the Emmons American Legion Louis/Tviete Post 317.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Erma Jean Gettis, of Lake Mills, Iowa, three children, Randy (Jane) Gettis, of Winnebago, Minnesota, Linda Schuller, of Mount Gilead, Ohio, and Tammy (Dick) Barkema, of Klemme, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Benjamin and Sarah Gettis of Winnebago, Minnesota, Amanda, Casandra, and Taylor Barkema, of Klemme, Iowa, Melissa Schuller, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Christopher, Thomas, Katie, and Brittany Schuller, all of Mount Gilead, Ohio; one great-granddaughter, Kaelynn, of Klemme, Iowa; two sisters, Amy Jamtgaard, of Crystal Lake, Iowa, and Marlys Larson, of Mason City, Iowa; and a brother, Dale (Clara) Gettis, also of Mason City, Iowa; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a baby sister, Inez; and a brother-in-law, Silas Jamtgaard.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, October 11, 2012, at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church, rural Joice, Iowa, with Pastor Kevin Olson officiating.
Visitation will be on Thursday at the church from 4:00-6:00 PM.
Burial will take place on Friday, October 12, 2012, at 9:00 AM at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, Iowa.
Military honors will be conducted by the Louis/Tviete Post #317 from Emmons, Minnesota.The family requests that memorials be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church building fund.
