(October 6, 1928 - August 29, 2012)H. Duane Sunde, age 83, of Vinje, Iowa, died on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.
H. Duane Sunde was born on October 6, 1928, to Henry and Ruby Robinson Sunde in Thompson, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje, Iowa, he grew up on a farm just south of Vinje and attended both country school and high school in Scarville, Iowa. Following high school, he began his farming career that continued up until his death. He had such a dedication and passion for farming that even after his retirement he actively monitored his crops as his family took over the farming operation.
On December 2, 1977, Duane married Eileen Peterson Johnson at Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje, Iowa. The couple resided on a farm just south of Vinje.
Devoted to his family, Duane enjoyed spending as much time as he could with them. He also loved to travel all over the United States, and Eileen and he spent many winters at their vacation home in Arizona. Some of his favorite past-time activities included flying his own airplane and watching Minnesota Twins baseball on TV. In addition, he spent countless hours fishing with his family as they took numerous trips up to what became known as “the little house” in Wabasha, Minnesota. Duane was also known as “Mr. Fix It” because of his ability to fix almost anything from electrical work to designing beautiful wooden furniture in his wood shop in the basement of the house.
An active member of his church, Duane served on the church council numerous times and on the cemetery board. He also attended bible study as well as chiurch services on a regular basis.
Duane is survived by his best friend and beloved wife, Eileen, of Vinje, Iowa, his step sons, Larry Johnson, of Vinje, Iowa, and Danny (Carmen) Johnson, of Belmond, Iowa; eleven grandchildren: Chuck (Christa) Rogalla, Chanda (Jim) Englin, Megan (Jeff) Steele, Don (Amy) Johnson, Jacqui (Brock) Bahe, Tom (Emma) Eastvold, Kendra (Kevin) Hanson, Emily Johnson, Jessica Linquist, Jackie (Cory) Stevenson, and J.R. Linquist; fourteen great-grandchildren: Dylan, Alayna, Elizabeth, Dylan, Madison, Winnie, Max, Emrie, Carie, Torie, Nevaeh, Chase, Bennett, and Anna; his beloved dog, Layola; and his sisters: Karen (Richard) Throne and Merna Sunde; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ruby Sunde; his mother- and father-in-law, Melvin and Elsie Peterson; his sister and brother-in-law, Harold and Leonora Grunhovd; and an infant granddaughter, Hillary Ann Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, September 1, 2012, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje, Iowa, with Pastor Kevin Olson officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Friday, August 31, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
