Bernice Lillian Iverson
(November 24, 1918 - July 13, 2012)

Bernice L. Iverson, age 93, of Lake Mills, formerly of Emmons, Minnesota, died Friday, July 13, 2012, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Bernice Lillian Ferley Iverson was born on November 24, 1918, at Silver Lake, in Worth County, Iowa, to Peter and Thea Heltne Ferley. She was baptized by Rev. A. C. Brena on December 25, 1918, and confirmed by Rev. Hans Fosness on May 14, 1933, both at Silver Lake Lutheran Church. She attended country school in Hartland Township, Worth County, Iowa.

Bernice married Franklin Edwin Iverson on December 21, 1941, at the Emmons Lutheran Church parsonage, Rev. O. T. Storasasli officiating. Frankie passed away on May 9, 1984. During World War II, Bernice lived with Frankie for three months during the summer of 1944 in Manitou Springs, Colorado, before he went “overseas.” The following summer, Bernice lived with him in Temple, Texas, while he was stationed at McClasky General Hospital recuperating from being shot while stationed in the European Theatre. Afterward, Bernice and Frankie lived in Emmons, Minnesota, where she was a wife, mother, and homemaker.

A member of the ELCW (Emmons Lutheran Church Women) and its Mission Circle, Bernice served on the Altar Guild for approximately thirty years.

Very well known for her sticky rolls, Bernice loved to give them away; they were the best! She spent much time in her garden, taking pride in the canning and freezing she did to provide for her family. Some of her specialties included watermelon pickles, dill pickles, and all sorts of jams and jellies. Bernice also loved to work with flowers and watch the various sporting events her children and grandchildren participated in.

Our family has been blessed to have shared in her life. Survivors include her two sons and two daughters, Gary (Linda Tanner) Iverson, of Bonita Springs, Florida, Linda (Gary) Helgeson, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Debbie (Dean) Helgeson, of Ankeny, Iowa, and Glaydon Iverson, of Lakeville, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Chad (Rumi) Iverson, Shawn (Julie) Helgeson, Melissa (Mark) Pruin, Bradley (Jolene) Helgeson, Cory (Kyla) Bidne, Tiffany Bidne, and Luke Iverson; and twelve great-grandchildren, Julie, Justin, and Nika Iverson, Tyler, Karli, and Carter Helgeson, Morgan, Ryan and Emily Pruin, Mason Helgeson, and Madelyn and Lillian Bidne. Bernice is also survived by a sister, Clara Craddock, of Burnsville, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law, Linda Carlson, of Lakeville, Minnesota; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frankie; two sisters, Mabel and Ruth; and five brothers, Lawrence, Alexander, Roy, Perry, and Clarence.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, Minnesota, with Pastor Julie Fiske officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, rural Emmons.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to the Emmons Lutheran Church.
