Roy G. Bendickson
(February 7, 1922 - July 9, 2012)

Roy G. Bendickson, age 90, of Lake Mills, died peacefully on Monday, July 09, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

He was born on February 7, 1922, in Winnebago County, Iowa, to Amos and Helen (Wigern) Bendickson. Baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje, Iowa, he grew up in rural Iowa and quit high school to help his father farm.

A WWII veteran, Roy served his country in the United States Army from 1943-1946 while stationed in the South Pacific under General MacArthur. Roy was thrilled to be a part of the first Honor Flight from Winnebago County. He belonged to both the American Legion and the VFW and was honored this past Memorial Day for being a Legionnaire for sixty years. Roy was also a member of the Eagles.

Most remembered for his twenty-five years as head custodian at Lake Mills Community School, Roy had worked at many jobs over the years. He was proud to have served on the Lake Mills Ambulance for many years. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, dancing, getting a new car every year, and going to Bonanza almost daily for lunch to see “his girls.” Roy had perfected the art of “charming” all the waitresses.

In 1959, Roy married Palma Honsey, who died in 1989. In 1992, he married Elaine Nappe Solomonson, who preceded him in death earlier this year. With his marriage to Elaine, Roy proudly accepted the role of dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Survivors include his two step-children, Mary Anderson, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, and Bob (Cindy) Solomonson, of Mesa, Arizona; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Brian, Inga, and Robert, all of Arizona; and six great-grandchildren, Noah, Brody, Wyatt, Audrey, Odin, and Waylon; and a sister-in-law, Viola Bendickson, of Arkansas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, Dean (Sandy) Bendickson, Jay (Trina) Bendickson, Ross (Sandra) Bendickson, Steve Bendickson, Marcia (Randy) Mincer, Lori McDonald, Helen (Brad) Bena, Mary (Paul) Swanson, Paul David (Debbie) Greene, and Ruth Ann (Duane) Thompson.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Helen Bendickson; his wives, Palma and Elaine; his sister, Maurine (Marvin) Greene; his brothers, Ingvald (Vera) Bendickson, Arnold (JoDell) Bendickson, and Marvin Bendickson as well as two brothers in childhood; and a niece Linda Diekhuis.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa and at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit for the tender, compassionate care Roy received during his last two days.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 16, 2012, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills, with military honors conducted by the Otto/Chose Post #235 of Lake Mills.

Visitation will be on Sunday, July 15, 2012, beginning with a sharing service at 3:30, which all friends and family are invited to attend. Public visitation will continue from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
