Mildrid "Joanne" Nickson
(November 14, 1949 - May 4, 2012)

Mildrid “Joanne” Nickson, age 62, of Lake Mills, died Friday, May 04, 2012, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

The oldest of four children, Mildrid Joanne Nickson was born on November 14, 1949, in Forest City, Iowa, to Robert and Mildrid (Tjernagel) Nickson. After special education was implemented in the schools, Joanne attended Lake Mills Community School until she was 21 years old.

Joanne enjoyed immersing herself in books and encyclopedias. She taught herself to write and type, and she had many spiritual conversations with her mother. Joanne’s mom, Mildrid, was constantly making sure that Joanne understood everything that they discussed.

After completing her schooling, Joanne took it upon herself to make arrangements to move first to the Winnebago County Home and then to Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, Iowa. Feeling as if she was with family, she loved the time she spent at both residences. In 2007, she became a resident of the Lake Mills Care Center. A wonderful swimmer, she spent many hours at the pool in Lake Mills.

Survivors include two brothers, Kenneth (Darcy) Nickson and Lee (Barb) Nickson, all of Lake Mills, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Debbie (Michael) Chisholm; and several nieces and nephews, Shannon (Ryan) Kesler, Crystal (Chris) Cockrum, Brook (Justin) Byars, Alisha (Dan) Mielke, Toni (Jared) Nicol, Brett Nickson, Michael (Dana) Chisholm, and Cody Nickson. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews as well as aunties and uncles and other extended relatives.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mildrid; a brother, Gerald Nickson; and a nephew, Dillin Nickson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 7, 2012, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, with Pastor Ted Barthels officiating.
Burial will take place in the Synod Evangelical Cemetery in Lake Mills.
Visitation will be on Sunday, May 6, 2012, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to services on Monday.
