LeRoy Richard Moe

LeRoy Richard Moe, 93, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

LeRoy Richard Moe was born on December 20, 1918, in Winnebago County, Iowa, to Henry and Anna (Horvei) Moe. He attended rural schools and graduated from Lake Mills High School.

On April 3, 1943, LeRoy married Hazel Haugland at Trempealeau Valley Church in Wisconsin. They made their home in Chicago, South Dakota, and California, prior to moving to Lake Mills, Iowa, in 1953. LeRoy worked as a trade school teacher, an electrician, and a printer. He learned to fix sewing machines from his father-in-law and continued with this trade for over fifty years.

LeRoy was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, teaching both Sunday school and Bethel Bible Study classes, acting as superintendent, and serving on the stewardship committee as well as in various other church related capacities.

LeRoy and Hazel enjoyed traveling to Europe, Alaska, North Carolina, and the surrounding Midwestern states. In addition, he started painting at age 70. At age 88, he wrote a book entitled, “Moe Farm Memories,” about his life growing up as the youngest of fourteen children on the family farm north of Lake Mills.

LeRoy’s survivors include his five children, Nancy L. Reinsmoen, of Los Angeles, California, Rollyn L. Moe, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Carol A. (Charles H.) Rayburn, of Mason City, Iowa, David R. Moe, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Donald R. (Starr) Moe, of Jenks, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Jennifer) Reinsmoen, of Roswell, New Mexico, Rachel (Tony) Cohn, of Phoenix, Arizona, Christine (David) Wiese, of Slinger, Wisconsin, Bridget (Matt) Edson, of Nashua, Iowa, Brendon Moe, of Des Moines, Iowa, Brenda Moe, of Joice, Iowa, Parker Moe, of Jenka, Oklahoma; and four great-grandchildren, Ethan Cohn, Reece Reinsmoen, and Ian and Isaac Wiese. He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Lenora Haugland of Rock Island, Illinois, and Carma Flugum, of Lake Mills, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended relative and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel, his parents, and thirteen siblings: Alfred, Evelyn, Mabel, Carl, and Hamlet Moe, Wilma Anderson, Beulah Martinson, Hulda Johnson, Millie Albano, Violet and Lillian Honken, Eleanor Iverson, and Myrtle Moen.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating.

Family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday evening at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again one hour prior to the service.

Inurnment will take place at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Lake Mills, Iowa.
