Bessie Eastvold
(January 17, 1923 - February 29, 2012)

Bessie Eastvold, age 89, of Rake, Iowa, passed away at the Blue Earth United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minnesota, on Wednesday, February 29, 2012.

Bessie Arlene (Durby) Eastvold was born January 17th, 1923, near Woden, Iowa. She was the daughter of Levi and Mabel (Rognehaugh) Durby. Having grown up in the Buffalo Center area, she graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1940. She attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis the following year; there her sweetheart, Julius Eastvold, proposed to her.

Bessie married Julius Eastvold on June 4th, 1941, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, Iowa. Their union was blessed with five sons, Allen, Merlin, James, Paul, and Darrell. Julius and Bessie worked side by side as they farmed, milked cows, and raised hogs and chickens for forty-five years. Over the years, they made their home on farms by Frost, Wells, Leland, and Thompson, before they purchased the farm east of Rake, Iowa, in 1955. Following the death of her husband, Julius, Bessie moved to a house in Rake, Iowa. She lived there until recently when she made her home at Friendship Court Assisted Living in Blue Earth, Minnesota.

Over the years, Bessie loved doing crafts, caring for her lawn, garden, and flowers, and helping with quilting for the Ladies Aid Society as well as other groups at Zion Lutheran Church. She had a special place in her heart for her children, her grandchildren, and her precious great grandchildren. She found great comfort in her family and in her faith in Christ.

Bessie and Julius traveled both to Norway to visit relatives and to Bolivia, South America, to visit Bessie’s sister, Marjorie, and her husband, Henrick, who were serving as missionaries there. She often spoke fondly of these memorable trips.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Julius, in 1999, a son, Allen, in 2011, an infant son, Merlin LeRoy, and a daughter-in-law, Patricia; a sister, Ordale Hefta, an infant brother, Paul David; and seven brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law.

She is survived by her sons, James (special friend Carole), of Grimes, Iowa, Paul (Karilyn), of Springfield, Illinois, and Darrell (Ginny), of Mankato, Minnesota; one sister, Marjorie Erickson, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; her grandchildren, Tim Eastvold, Darla (Brad) Evenson, Matthew Eastvold, Jeffrey (Tara) Eastvold, Joshua (Katie) Eastvold, Janna (Tom) Dailey, David (Rachel) Eastvold, Jonathan (Katharine) Eastvold, Philip (Elizabeth) Eastvold, Renae (Chris) Schenk, Darin (Shanna) Eastvold, and Todd (Jenae) Eastvold; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Marion Eastvold and Lillian Eastvold, both of Blue Earth, Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Monday, March 5, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, Iowa, with Pastor Terry Mahnke officiating. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center.

Burial will be at the United Lutheran Cemetery in Frost, Minnesota. The Winter Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Buffalo Center is assisting the family with arrangements.
