Roger Allen Stenberg
(September 17, 1938 - February 7, 2012)

LELAND - Roger A. Stenberg, age 73, of Leland, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012, at his home in rural Leland.

On September 17th, 1938, on the family farm in Rake Iowa, C.N. and Hazel J. (Helgren) Stenberg brought Roger Allen Stenberg into this world. Roger was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Through the eighth grade, he attended grade school at country school No.8, King Township, located on his father’s farm. Roger credits his sister Harriet for being his best teacher as she was the one who taught him how to read. He graduated from Thompson Community High School in 1956 where he excelled in the Coon Grove FFA chapter.

Upon graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Brandt. Roger worked for several area farmers and ag-related businesses until finally settling on a farmstead west of Leland in 1959 where he and Barbara harvested grain and raised cattle and hogs. Along with farming, he did custom bailing and combining. In 1974 he moved the family across the “tracks” and has resided there, farming until the last day of his life.

An active member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa, and involved in his community, Roger also served as a board member for the Thompson Co-op and a volunteer for the Winnebago County Pork Producers. In addition, he really enjoyed hunting and fishing trips with his buddies. However, he spent the best times of his life with his family.

Roger is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Barbara; three children: Cynthia K. Stenberg, wife of Kingsley Johnson, of Thompson, Kenneth A. Stenberg, of Leland, and Tamara M. Stenberg, wife of Stephen Sheehan, of Thompson; six grandchildren, Kelsey K. Eveland (Jason), Adam R. Stenberg (Shylouh), Anthony R. Stenberg, Jeremiah K. Johnson (fiancée Annie), Cord N. Stenberg, Kirsten M. Johnson, and two adopted granddaughters, Abby and Emily Bray; as well as five great-grandchildren: Ana, Misty, Samantha, Zackery and Nathaniel. Other survivors include his sisters, Harriet Stenberg Hagenson and Mavis Stenberg, wife of Dean Linde, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; his brother-in-law, Reyburn Hagenson; his nephew, Kent Hagenson; and a nephew in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, February 11th, 2012, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa, with Pastor Boyd Longshore and Pastor Wayne Halvorson officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
