Dorothy L. Madson, age 84, died on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at HealthEast St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood, Minnesota.

Dorothy Laurene (Hovland) Madson was born on June 11, 1935, in rural Lake Mills to Orville and Gladys (Peterson) Hovland. She attended and then graduated from Lake Mills High School. In 1953, Dorothy was crowned the “Sweetcorn Sweetheart” at the first Sweetcorn Festival in Lake Mills. Then. in 1955, she married Robert Madson at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. Over the years, Dorothy and Robert made their home in Emmons, Mankato, and New Ulm before finally settling in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, in the mid-1960s.

A homemaker, Dorothy loved her family above all else. In addition, she worked outside the home, primarily for the State of Minnesota as an interpreter for the Deaf (a job which gave her a great of satisfaction). Nonetheless, she felt most proud of the children she and Robert raised.

Dorothy’s hobbies and interests included spending time at their cabin, traveling around the United States and Canada, and vacationing in Florida on the Atlantic coast. Moreover, she had a passion for collecting, refinishing, and selling antiques.

Dorothy’s survivors include her husband, Robert, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; three children: Shari Madson, also of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Mark (Shauna) Madson, of Littleton, Colorado, and Michelle (Rob) Holt, of Gig Harbor, Washington; four beloved grandchildren, Matthew, Kaitlyn, Danny, and Holly; and a sister-in-law, Kay Hovland; as well as other relatives and wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, David Hovland.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, in the chapel of Salem Lutheran Church, 401 South Lake Street, Lake Mills, with Pastor Joel Guttormson officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills. Dorothy's family suggest that memorials be made to the American Stroke Foundation, 6405 Metcalf Avenue, Suite 214, Overland Park, Kansas 66202.
