Richard Alvin Helland, 77, of Emmons, Minnesota, died on Sunday, October 6, 2019, at Our House Senior Living Care Center in Austin, Minnesota.

Richard was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa, on August 6, 1942, to Alvin and Madeline (Pederson) Helland. After growing up in rural Bricelyn, Minnesota, and Scarville, Iowa, he graduated from the Southern School of Agriculture in Waseca, Minnesota, in 1961. On August 3, 1974, he married Nancy (Thorson) Helland at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time with family, farming, hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Richard is survived by his wife, Nancy Helland, of Emmons; his sons, Matthew (Blanca) Helland, of Millville, New Jersey, and Scott (Michelle Schluter) Helland, of Joice; his daughter, Amy (Shane) Taylor, of Grimes, Iowa; his grandchildren: Maya, Riley, Madeline, and Cadie Helland and Austin, Brody, and Addison Taylor; his brother and sisters: Carolyn Thompson, of Austin, Minnesota, Judy Roslien, of Moberly, Missouri, Wayne (Ellen) Helland, of Scarville, Iowa, and Karen (David Hutchins), of Springfield, Illinois; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Phillip Helland.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, October 11, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 105 East 3rd Street, Scarville, Iowa, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. A visitation is scheduled from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M., Thursday, October 10, 2019, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again for one hour before the church service on Friday. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Scarville, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Richard A. Helland memorial fund in care of the family.
