Gladys Lorraine Hanson
April 27, 1921 - August 16, 2019

Gladys L. Hanson, age 98, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Gladys Lorraine (Johnson) Hanson was born on April 27, 1921, on a farm east of Lake Mills to Gustof and Alma (Sanvik) Johnson. She attended Scarville schools, graduating in 1939. Then, she worked as a nanny in Lake Mills. In 1942, she married Burton Kobbervig. Subsequently, she traveled with him while he trained in the U.S. Army Air Corp. Regrettably, he died in Lake Mills in 1952 from health complications.

Gladys worked in the kitchen at the Lake Mills Community School from 1944 to 1954. On June 26, 1954, she married Harvey Hanson of Northwood. They made their home in Albert Lea, Minnesota, where Harvey worked for Wilson & Company. Gladys, on the other hand, worked at Halverson Elementary School as a cook. For twenty-four years, they belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. In 1978, however, they retired and moved to Lake Mills.

Active at Salem Lutheran Church, she joined the altar guild and WELCA. In addition, she enjoyed her church circle and helped with quilting. Moreover, she delivered meals on wheels, volunteered at the Lake Mills Care Center, and belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary for seventy-four years.

She and Harvey made several trips to Leech Lake in Minnesota and to Las Vegas, Nevada, where they enjoyed spending time with Gladys’ sister and her husband, Alvira and Carl Kloster. Gladys loved family gatherings with her siblings and other relatives, which most often, took place on her parents’ farm.

Gladys passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019, at the Lake Mills Care Center where she had lived for the last two years and eight months. She is survived by her son, Danny (Mary) Hanson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and a granddaughter, Kristina Krieger, of Eagan, Minnesota, as well as by several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Victor Sundsvold; her husbands, Burton and Harvey; her brothers: Palmer and Kenneth Johnson and Russel and Leslie Sundsvold; a sister, Alvira Kloster; a daughter-in-law, Devra Hanson; and three nephews.

Gladys will be remembered for her kindness, her smile, her willingness to help others, her hospitality, her wonderful cooking skills, and above all, her love of faith and family.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Monday, August 26, 2019, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Joel Guttormson officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills. Visitation for Gladys is scheduled for Sunday, August 25, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue for one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Memorials may be directed to the Salem Lutheran Church heating/cooling fund, 401 South Lake Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450.
