Richard "Dick" Thompson
November 12, 1925 - July 3, 2019

Richard “Dick” Thompson, 93, of Forest City, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Richard William Thompson, a son of William and Alpha (Hanson) Thompson, was born on November 12, 1925, at the family home in Worth County, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, Dick attended Forest City Community Schools. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Idaho. After the war, he returned to Forest City and found work with various carpenters in the area.

On September 24, 1950, he married Beverly Harris at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode, Iowa. They made their home in Forest City in the home which Dick had built. There, he and Bev raised their two sons, Kent and Kirby. Known around town as “Hammer Dick,” he owned and operated his own contracting business, Richard Thompson Construction, which he ran until he retired in 1987.

To have fun, Dick and Bev spent their winters in the South, living in their motor home. In addition, he had a passion for restoring old cars in his “playhouse” with his friends. He restored a 1914 Ford Model T years ago which he drove in many parades. He, also, enjoyed going to flea markets and auctions.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Kent (Connie) Thompson, of Forest City; three grandchildren: Allison (Brian) Strommen, Brooke (Kyle) Dennis, and Kelli Thompson; five great-grandchildren: Dillon, Kyra, Sophia, Keegan, and Parker; and his brother, Robert (Pearl) Thompson. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beverly; and his son, Kirby.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Zech Anderson officiating. Inurnment will follow at Madison Township Cemetery with military rites by the Forest City American Legion Post 121. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, July 12, 2019, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Home, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, and will resume one hour before services at the church.
