Elizabeth “Betty” J. Dean, 98, of Forest City, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Elizabeth Jane Dean, a daughter of John and Ella (Dannehy) Bunting, was born on June 15, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois. She attended St. Viator Elementary School and graduated from Alvernia High School in 1939. Then, she continued her education at the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota, earning a bachelor’s degree in dietetics. After working at Charity Hospital in New Orleans as a dietician, she returned to Chicago to work at Wesley Memorial Hospital.

On July 23, 1949, she married Edward J. Dean at St. Viator Catholic Church in Chicago. She loved her role as a homemaker, raising three children. They, subsequently, lived in Chicago, New Haven, Connecticut, Prairie Village, Kansas, Needham, Massachusetts, and Wilmette, Illinois. Their summer vacations, however, they spent fishing with her family in Michigan and Pittsburg, New Hampshire, at the Glen Lodge.

In October of 2002, they moved to Forest City to be closer to family. Betty enjoyed doing volunteer work in schools and at church. She. also, liked golfing, bowling, and swimming at the Forest City YMCA. She spent her last six and a half years at the Good Samaritan Society making the other residents and staff a part of her family. She had many fond memories of living there. She was a communicate of St. James Catholic Church.

Betty is survived by her three children, Kathy (Rod) Barkema, of Forest City, David (Diana) Dean, of Crossville, Tennessee, and Maryellen Dean, of Rushford, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Daniel (Novella) Dean, and their son, David Ethan Dean; and Jonathon Dean; a niece, Mary Jane (Bill) McGinnis; a nephew, Tom Bunting; and her beloved cat, Mickey. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward, in 2006; her sisters, Mary and Barbara Bunting; and her brother, John Bunting.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, July 8, 2019, at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City with Rev. Fr. Jim Dubert officiating. Burial will follow at St. James Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Sunday at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Home, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, with a Scriptural wake service at 4:30 P.M. followed by a recitation of the rosary. Memorials may be directed to St. James Catholic Church or the Good Samaritan Society.
