He loved the game of croquet and became a tough competitor when he played against his family. A member of the American Legion, he, especially, enjoyed his Honor Flight Trip in 2009. A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lakota, he cherished his faith.

On June 16, 1992, Ray married Phyllis Klaus. Able to travel and enjoy time together with family and friends, they spent their winters in California and their summers in Buffalo Center.

Ray became a resident of the Timely Mission Nursing Home in October of 2017. He joined his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 26, 2019.
