Esther Irene Van Hove
August 8, 1923 - May 23, 2019

Esther Irene Van Hove, 95, formerly of Thompson, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2019, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Esther Irene Van Hove was born at home on August 08, 1923, in Kossuth County, rural Elmore, Minnesota, to Carl and Annie (Hauskins) Anderson. Baptized and confirmed at Liberty Lutheran Church, Rake, Iowa, Esther graduated from Rake High School in 1941 and Waldorf College, Forest City, Iowa, with a teaching certificate in 1943. She taught in various rural one room schools, the last one in German Valley.

On February 21, 1949, Esther married Clarence Francis Van Hove at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake, Iowa. They made their first home together in rural Woden, Iowa, where they began farming. In 1960, However, they moved to rural Thompson, Iowa, Eden Township, Winnebago County, Iowa. Esther worked alongside Clarence on the family farm doing many chores. In 2012, she and Clarence moved to Mills Harbour in Lake Mills, Iowa, and later to the Lake Mills Care Center.

A devoted mother, wife, grandmother, and great grandmother, Esther became an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she held many offices. In addition, she remained a teacher all her life with her children, grandchildren, and Sunday school students. Moreover, she loved her role as a farm wife and homemaker who excelled at gardening, cooking, and baking. On the farm, they never had a shortage of hired hands or volunteers to help with the work. Well-known for her very good cooking skills, she fed the help well. Even in her later years, Esther proved she was a farm wife at heart; as a resident at the care center, she would still ask about the crops and the weather. Unbelievably, she, also, found time to do embroidery work as a hobby.

She will be missed by her family which includes her three children: Donald (Catherine) Van Hove, of Thompson, Allan (Teresa) Van Hove, also of Thompson, and Cheryl (Corey) Herrick, of Lake Mills; seven grandchildren: Jason (Julie) Van Hove, of Story City, Iowa, Kyle (April) Van Hove, of Thompson, Kristin (Landon) Luttrell, of Naperville, Illinois, Kelly (Dan) Wright, of Des Moines, Iowa, Mara (Kyle) Frerichs, of Buffalo Center, Jeremy (Shannon) Herrick, of Austin, Minnesota, and Annie (Jeff) Dixon, of Queen Creek, Arizona; and fifteen great-grandchildren: Brooklyn, Charley, and Ellie Dixon; Clare, Luke, Natalie Frerichs; Jacob and Madison Herrick; Owen and Avery Luttrell; Caia, Elijah, Emma, Esther, and Zoe Van Hove; her sisters- and brothers-in-law, Sylvester (Wanda) Van Hove, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Sylvia Kiburz, of Bedford, Iowa, Caroline Stenzel, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and LaLonie Van Hove of Des Moines, Iowa; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence, in 2014; a daughter in infancy; and two brothers, Alfred and Leonard Anderson as well as Leonard’s wife, Lillian.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 10681 500th Street, Thompson, Iowa 50478, with Pastor Kris Ferkin officiating. Visitation is scheduled for 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday, May 27, 2019, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa.
