Alice Jean Potter
September 27, 1931 - January 13, 2019Alice J. Potter, 87, of Garner, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond.
Alice, a daughter of Sander and Nettie (Hanna) Stenersen, was born on September 27, 1931, near Woden. She attended country school near Woden and graduated from Lake Mills High School. Next, she worked at Decker’s in Mason City in the food service department. On January 1, 1955, she married Galen E. Potter at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed near Buffalo Center, Forest City, and Crystal Lake until they retired. Alice, also, worked at the Westview Care Center in Britt and Bill’s Family of Foods in Garner. After Galen passed away in 1997, she moved to Garner. For the past two years, she had resided at the Prairie View Apartments in Garner. Moreover, after retiring, she volunteered at the Concord Care Center. Otherwise, she enjoyed quilting, crocheting, doing needle point, sewing, bowling, gardening, and watching Jeopardy.
A member of the United Methodist Church in Garner and the UMW, Alice is survived by her five children: Elaine (Tom) Deibler, of Garner, Galen W. (Janet) Potter, of Chesterfield, Virginia, Ruby (John) Golnick, of Garner, Cheryl (Ed) Barkema, of Garner, and Doug (Deb) Potter, of Joice; thirteen grandchildren: Brian C. Andersen; Kyle (Lisa) Barkema; Hannah and Matthew Deibler (Jessica); Jonathan (Megan), Joseph, and Thomas (Racine) Dodd; Hilary (Mike) Formanek; Amanda J. (Robert) Mason; Betsy (Phil Deierling) and Jen (Tom) Potter; Lindsey (Jordan) Prescott; and Karla (Kevin) Rauk; thirty-five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Maynard (Patty) Stenersen, of Blanchester, Ohio, and Eugene Stenersen, of Lake Mills; and a sister, Sharon Hauan, of Thompson; as well as by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Galen, May 15, 1997; her grandson, Robert W. Potter; and her siblings: Pearl Bybee; Blanche Durby; Inez Lee; Vera Lewis; and Eddie, Norman, Palmer, and Robert Stenersen.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with Rev. Paul Evans officiating. Burial will follow at Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 East 4th Street, in Garner and will resume one hour before services at the church.
