She attended country school and high school in Leland, but graduated from Forest City High School. In 1947, she married Truman Haugen. They made their home on a farm north of Leland.

A lifelong member of the West Prairie Lutheran Church, she loved God, family, and home. Having made singing a big part of her life, she enjoyed leading the sunbeam choir. In addition, she liked sewing, baking, traveling, visiting with her friends, and enjoying her role as a farmer’s wife.

In 1970, she graduated from La James Cosmetology College in Mason City and opened Holly-Mar Beauty Salon at her home. In addition, for many years, she volunteered at the 4-H food stand at the Winnebago County Fair and at the Forest City Elementary School.

After the death of her husband, Truman, in 1995, she moved to Clear Lake for a short time before settling in Leland in 2008. Blessed to have many good friends and neighbors, she also spent many happy hours with a special friend, Jim Schaack, of Mason City.

Marlys is survived by her sons, Neil (Donna) and Kim Haugen; her daughter, Holly (John) Adams; her grandchildren: Jeremy Adams; Angela, Anthony (Lindsay), and Jake (Melissa) Haugen; Gretchen Hengesteg; and Cody (Ashley) Dirksen; and her great-grandchildren: Dylan, Emma, Isaac, Kaiden, Katelyn, Leah, Xander.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, November 2, 2018, at the West Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Leland, Iowa, with Dr. Pat Hall of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake officiating. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Thursday, November 1, 2018, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, Iowa. Burial will follow at the West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.
