Roger Joseph Downing, age 56, of rural Lake Mills, died on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at his home.

Roger was born on July 22, 1962, in Charles City, Iowa, to James and Carol (Nehls) Downing. He graduated from the Charles City High School and went on to attend technical school. After completing his education, Roger enlisted in the US Navy. Having completed his service, he was honorably discharged. On September 9, 1989, he married Laurie Grunhovd at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Most of his life, Roger worked as a mechanic, having been employed by Norsemen Trucking, Rognes Brothers Excavating, and most recently for the Worth County Secondary Road Department.

Roger said he never met a stranger, remembered everyone’s name, and was never shy about carrying on a conversation. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, hunting for deer and pheasants, and spending a weekend watching football on TV.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie Downing, of Lake Mills; three sisters: Janet (Delbert) Pratt, of Nashua, Cathy (Bob) Nordman, of Texas, and Pauline (Bill) Bravener, of Frederika, Iowa; and four brothers: Michael (Joyce), Bill (Mary), and Steve (Deb) Downing, all of Charles City, and Gary (Pam) Downing, of Nashua; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his dogs, Duke and Daisy. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, James and Carol Downing.

A memorial visitation for Roger will be held on Friday, October 19, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills. Military Honors will be conducted at 7:00 PM, Friday, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home by the Louis/Tveite Post #317 from Emmons, Minnesota. A celebration of his life and inurnment will follow at a later date.
