Shirley A. Schutter
July 22, 1930 - September 17, 2018

Shirley Arlene Schutter, age 88, of Forest City, died on Monday, September 17, 2018, in Leland as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

Shirley Arlene Schutter, a daughter of Gustaf and Agnes (Larson) Gustafson, was born on July 22, 1930, in Mt. Valley Township. Baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, she attended country school through the eighth grade and then Forest City High School, graduating in 1947. Next, she enrolled at Iowa Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 1949. She taught school first in Britt and later in Fort Dodge before substitute teaching in the Thompson – Forest City area.

On June 19, 1955, she married Vernon Schutter at the Winnebago Lutheran Church. They farmed near Buffalo Center for three years before buying a farm near Leland where they lived for forty years. With the arrival of Beth and Bill, Shirley became a 4-H leader, taught Sunday School, and attended her kids’ activities. She, always, treasured her family, and she enjoyed the times she spent with them. Moreover, Vernon and Shirley liked to travel. They visited Alaska, New York City, Mexico, Washington, D.C., and San Antonio, Texas. With her daughter, Beth, she, also, had fun on a trip to Europe. In 1997, Vernon and Shirley turned the family farm over to their son, Bill, and his family before moving into Forest City.

On New Year’s Eve 2001, Shirley suffered a severe stroke, but she didn’t let that slow her down. She continued participating at church and belonged to several study, card, and birthday clubs. In addition, she enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins baseball games. An avid reader, she kept up on current events, and she maintained her interest in the running of the family farm.

She is survived by a daughter, Beth Eilers, and her husband, Dan, of Clive, Iowa; her son, Bill, and his wife, Rita, of rural Leland, Iowa; four grandchildren: Austin and Sydney Eilers, Ethan, and his wife, Samantha, and Haley Schutter; two great-grandchildren, Emerson and Rylee Schutter; her brother, Carroll Gustafson, and his wife, Karen; and her sister-in-law, Harriet Gustafson as well as by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Vernon; her brother, Gerald Gustafson; her brothers- and sisters-in-law: Evelyn and Ralph Taylor and Harry and Marcella Schutter; and her nephews, Jon and Jeff Gustafson.

Funeral services for Dorothy Schutter will be held at11:00 A.M., Friday, September 21, 2018, at the West Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Leland, Iowa, with Pastor Steve Bang officiating. Visitation is scheduled for 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Thursday, September 20, 2018, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, Iowa, and an hour before services at the church on Friday.
