April 4, 1926 - May 9, 2018

Herbert G. Peterson, 92, of Forest City, died on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A son of Wilfred and Eleanor (Jones) Peterson, Herb was born on April 4, 1926, in Mt. Valley Township. He attended schools in Mt. Valley and Forest City. After graduating from high school in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific. After the war ended, he returned to Forest City and joined his father on the family farm. On January 19, 1947, he married Bonna Otis in Forest City.

After years of working for Standard Oil as a farm agent and for Winnebago Industries as a customer service manager, he considered his fifteen years of driving a school bus for Forest City schools as his favorite job.

Survivors include his wife, Bonna, of Forest City; his children, David (Patti), of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Susan (Marty) Tendler, of St. Louis, Missouri, Steve (Tina), of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Jim (Cindy), of Minneapolis, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his sister, Janice Knudtson, of Forest City. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Roger, who died in World War II; his sister, Miriam; and his brother-in-law, Ed Knudtson.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 A.M., Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 246 South Clark Street, Forest City, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. A visitation will take place during the hour before the services on Saturday at the church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, Iowa, with Military Honors performed by the Forest City American Legion #121. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Winnebago Historical Society.
