Hazel Galina (Erickson) Hengesteg
July 01, 1921 - January 03, 2018

Hazel Galina (Erickson) Hengesteg, of Rochester, Minnesota, formerly of Northwood, Iowa, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at the Pine Haven Care Center, Pine Island, Minnesota.

A daughter of Henry and Gunhild (Moe) Erickson, Hazel Galina Hengesteg was born on July 1, 1921, on a farm in Worth County, Iowa, near Emmons, Minnesota. In due course, she attended and then graduated from Lake Mills High School with the Class of 1939. On November 14, 1948, Hazel married Lyle Hengesteg at the Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, Minnesota. Subsequently, they were blessed with two children, Linda and Lynn.

Hazel had many experiences throughout her life. One of the Rosie the Riveters during World War II, she worked in factories making everything from chocolate-covered cherries to camper cushions and fuel filters. She, later, moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where she babysat for many a doctor’s children and earned the title of “Grandma Hazel”.

She lived most of her life in the Northwood and Lake Mills, Iowa, area. At different times, she attended both the Emmons and Silver Lake Lutheran Churches where she taught dozens of third graders Sunday School and actively participated in the Ladies Aid Society and the Sunshine Circle. Moreover, she became an active member of the Emmons VFW.

Hazel and Lyle loved to travel. They set off for Hawaii, Texas, Indiana, and Ohio as well as on many short trips throughout the Midwest. Most of all, however, they liked their trips to Rochester, Minnesota, to spend time with their four grandkids. In addition, they loved to spend summers on the family farm with their family since their entire lives revolved around these important people.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Linda (Ron) Lyman, of Rochester, Minnesota; her granddaughters, Tamara (Steve) Mosing, of Rochester, Minnesota, Jennifer (D.J.) Horman, of Eyota, Minnesota, and Katherine (Jeremy) Hildman, of Rochester, Minnesota; her grandson, Robert (Amy) Lyman, of Tigard, Oregon; her great-grandchildren: Jon and Sophia Mosing; Emma and Carter Horman; and Sybastyen, Tristyn and Josiah Hildman.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle, in 1984; and her son, Lynn, in 2012.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, January 6, 2018, at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, 705 Silver Lake Road, Northwood, Iowa 50459, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday evening, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again for one hour before the service at the church. Burial will take place at the Silver Lake Cemetery in rural Northwood, Iowa. The family suggest that memorials be made to the Silver Lake Lutheran Church.
