May 31, 1934 - December 13, 2017

Joann Nola Jacobs, 83, of Thompson, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at the Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Joann Nola Gjerstad, a daughter of Laurance and Myrtle (Helgren) Gjerstad, was born on a farm near Buffalo Center on May 31, 1934. Baptized by her cousin Rev. I Riesem and confirmed in 1946 at Bethany Lutheran Church, she married Ronald Jacobs on March 8, 1958, also at Bethany Lutheran Church.

She worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), the Winnebago County Courthouse, and Peoples State Bank. She, also, enjoyed helping on the farm, especially running the combine during harvest time. In addition, she liked traveling with her husband, Ron, listening to Blue Grass music, and having coffee and playing cards with her friends.

A excellent cook, she enjoyed cooking for her family. Moreover, she took pride in her role as a grandma and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Joann is survived by her husband, Ronald, of Thompson; her son, John Jacobs; her grandchildren: Erin, and her husband, Jared Cross, of Clarion, Iowa, Emily, and her husband, Frank Anderson, of Marion, Iowa, and Andrew Jacobs, of Plymouth, Minnesota, and her great-grandchildren: Sidney, Brenna, and Aiden Cross; and Grace, Owen, and Oliver Anderson.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Scott and David Jacobs; her sister, Lois Halvorson; and her brother, Dr. Paul Gjerstad as well as by many cousins.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, December 16, 2017, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Judy Wozniak officiating. A gathering of family and friends will take place one hour before services at the church on Saturday. Burial of cremains will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson.
