L. Lorraine Swanson
April 12, 1921 - November 29, 2017

L. Lorraine Swanson, 96, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, November 29, 2017, at the Westview Care Center in Britt, Iowa.

Lois Lorraine Swanson, a daughter of C. D. “Ted” and Alice (Larson) Fox, was born on April 12, 1921, at her grandparents' home in Carlton County, Minnesota. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Forest City, Iowa, where Lois spent her entire life before entering Westview Care Center in Britt four years ago. Having since remained there, she, peacefully, went home to her Lord and Savior on November 29, 2017.

While attending school in Forest City, she participated in both choir and concert band. She graduated from Forest City High School in 1939. After attending Cedar Falls Teachers’ College, she taught at rural schools in Winnebago and Hancock Counties. Later, she worked as the bookkeeper for both the Forest City Dairy and the Forest City Creamery.

A member of First Baptist Church, Lorraine took part in the youth groups and the Prayer Warriors. Moreover, she taught first grade Sunday School for forty years. Always musically involved, she served as the choir and Sunday School pianist. In addition, she ministered in the Dorcas Society and Mission Circle.

On December 7, 1945, Lorraine married Virgil Swanson in Duluth, Minnesota, after which they made their home on Virgil’s parents’ farm in a house especially built for them. They spent their entire sixty-five years together on the family farm. A hardworking wife, mom, grandma, and great-grandma, she loved spending time with family and keeping busy with special sewing and embroidery projects which those who received them will, always, cherish.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, C. D. “Ted” and Alice Fox; her beloved husband, Virgil, in 2011; her infant son, Robert, in 1947; her sister and brother-in-law, Darlene and Art Beekmann, and her sisters- and brothers-in law, Delmer and Lillian Swanson and Ethel and Chester Gunderson.

She is survived by her son, Dana (Marci) Swanson; her daughter, JoLayne (Paul) Widen; four grandchildren: Emily (Chad) Anderson, Matt (Diane) Swanson, Josh (Lynnae) Widen, and Mandy (Cory) Champney; ten great-grandchildren: Cooper, Gracie, Paisley, and Riley Anderson; Brandon, Seth, and Trevor Champney; Kazra and Zade Swanson; and Nora Widen; as well as by many nieces and nephews, including: Doug, Jeff (Diana), and Michele Beekmann; Cyndy Johnson, Crys (Bill) Lowry, Lee (Stephanie) Swanson, Philip (Carol) Gunderson, and Richard (Doreen) Gunderson and their families. She dearly loved all of them!

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at the First Baptist Church, 18508 East HWY 9, Forest City, Iowa 50436, with Pastors Eric Weaver and Matt Rittgers officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, Iowa 50436, and will continue for one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.
