April 21, 1933 - April 02, 2017

Stanley S. Stover, age 83, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, formerly of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Sunday, April 2, 2017, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea after a four-year battle with multiple myeloma.

A son of Grover Cleveland and Genevieve (Gardalen) Stover, Stanley Sherman Stover was born on April 21, 1933, in Ashton, South Dakota. In 1951, he graduated from Thompson High School. A four-sport athlete, he won the contest for naming the new baseball diamond giving it the name, “Cubs Field.” He, later, attended Iowa State University. During the Korean Conflict, he served his country in the United States Army.

On January 17, 1959, Stanley married Judy Johnson at the United Methodist Church in Wells, Minnesota. Together, they farmed and raised their family in the Leland, Iowa, area. After retiring from farming, he worked as a welder for several years at Metal Culverts in Albert Lea, Minnesota. An active member of Salem Lutheran Church, the Lake Mills Lion’s Club, the Leland VFW, the Winnebago County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), and the Lake Mills Elevator Board, he served as a 4-H Leader as well. He enjoyed many fishing trips, flying with his son Randy, and visiting with his coffee buddies.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Stover, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; his sons, Randy Stover, of Tokyo, Japan, and Rick (Angie) Stover, of Story City, Iowa; and his daughter, Sandy (Bob) Hanna, of Geneva, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Becky (James) Reams, of Erlanger, Kentucky, James Stover, of Florence, Kentucky, Nick Stover, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Amanda Hanna, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and Spencer Hanna, of Geneva, Minnesota; his great-grandson, Jameson Reams, of Erlanger, Kentucky; and his brother, Loren (Hilma) Stover, of Bluff Springs, Illinois; along with several cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter, Steph Hanna; his brother- and sister-in-law, Robert (Buzzy) and Anita Johnson; and his mother- and father-in-law, Kay and Harvey Matson.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Salem Lutheran Church, 401 S Lake Street, Lake Mills, IA 50450, with Pastor Joel Guttormson officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 until 11:00 AM at the church before the service. Inurnment will take place at Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills, Iowa, with military honors performed by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose American Legion Post #235.
