David E. Steffens
October 28, 1938 - October 19, 2016David E. Steffens, age 77, died on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at his home in Lake Mills, Iowa.
David Edgar Steffens, son of Ray and Lucille (Anderson) Steffens, was born on October 28, 1938, in Kanawha, Iowa. Confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, he graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1956. He, then, went on to marry Bonnie Fjelstad of Lake Mills on September 8, 1957, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa. Subsequently, they had three children: David A, Michael, and Jay.
A go getter who never let obstacles get in his way, Dave or SR, as many called him, lived a full and happy life. If he saw an opportunity, he took advantage of it! With a young family, Dave, first, set his sights on becoming a Captain in the Sheriff’s Department of Blue Earth County [Minnesota]. After succeeding in that position for eleven years and getting some good stories to pass along, he decided he needed to find something that his boys could participate in as well. With that goal in mind, he set off to make Norsemen Trucking a very successful family-run business. Nevertheless, after spending twenty-three years building up a wonderful company, he and Bonnie decided to retire and focus on the other fun stuff they liked doing. Dave, however, had no real understanding of the word retirement as he continued to serve as an outstanding mayor of Lake Mills for six more years, finishing up his fourteen-year stint.
Dave enjoyed participating in many community organizations such as the Shriners, the Masons, and the Odd Fellows. Moreover, he served on the NIACC Foundation Board, the Mercy Foundation Board, the Lake Mills Theater Board, and the Lake Mills Chamber Development Corporation (LMCDC) and he helped with the Salem Enduring Gift Fund. As if he hadn’t accomplished enough already, he became a charter member of the Welcome Center Board as well as of Winn-Worth Betco, an organization dedicated to serving the economic development interests of Winnebago and Worth Counties. Nevertheless, when he wanted to play, he had no problem taking up one of the many hobbies he enjoyed. They included hunting with Wolfe, riding his motorcycle, flying his plane, fishing, and traveling.
All the joys in Dave’s life depended on the love and respect of his family and friends. A man of honor and truth, he was, always, willing to give a straight answer or help. Forever remembered and loved, he left a lasting impression on his community and the people who knew him.
David is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Bonnie, of Lake Mills, Iowa; his sons, David A., of Lake Mills, Iowa, Michael, and his wife, Margaret, of Waseca, Minnesota, and Jay, and his wife, Jean, also of Waseca, Minnesota; nine grandchildren: Stephanie Steffens, Kristy Neubauer (Adam), Michelle Wetzel (Nate), Molly Steffens, Becky Levorson (Darren), Matt Steffens, Mike Steffens, Jr., Jared Steffens (special friend Sasha), and Jordan Steffens (special friend Carlie); ten great-grandchildren: Lark, Olivia, Lilly, Kadyn, Isabelle, Avah, Reese, Gavin, Jade, and Dale; and one great-great-grandchild: Esabella; three brothers-in-law: David (Donna), Gary (Nancy), and Jim; and two sisters-in-law: Kathy and Cyndi; and one God child: Laura; along with many other friends and loved ones. Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Lucille Steffens, his parents-in-law, Leonard and Evelyn Fjelstad, and one sister-in-law, Mary.
