Milford Kenneth Helgeson
December 28, 1919 - September 12, 2016

Milford K. Helgeson, age 96, of Lake Mills, died on Monday, September 12, 2016, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa. He was born on December 28, 1919, in Winnebago County, Iowa, to Tilford and Louise (Honsey) Helgeson. He attended and graduated from Lake Mills High School. On June 28, 1946, he married Doris Elaine Bjelland at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church. They made their home and raised their family near Lake Mills where Milford farmed.

A longtime member of Salem Lutheran Church where he was confirmed as a young man, Milford served on various church boards as an adult. Throughout the years, he took an active interest in politics and the community, volunteering on the Lake Mills Community School Board, the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) Board, and the Winnebago County Telecom Association (WCTA) Board of Directors.

The definition of a Midwestern farmer, he planted seeds, checked crops, harvested his bounty, and introduced turkeys to the area. Consistently looking for projects to keep active and involved on the farm and with his family, he took great pride in his family and loved every minute he was able to spend with them.

Survivors include his three children, Janice Helgeson, David Helgeson, and Michael (wife Rosalie) Helgeson, all of Lake Mills; six grandchildren: Tara (Jon) Stene, of Zumbrota, Minnesota, Jessica (Nick) McLawhorn, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Rachel Helgeson, also of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ryan (Kelli) Helgeson, of Northfield, Minnesota, Justin (Megan) Helgeson, of Okoboji, Iowa, and Matthew (Julianne) Helgeson of Lake Mills; thirteen great-grandchildren: Tyler, Jenna, William, Téa, Zoe, Drew, Josie, Hayden, Conner, Lane, Brooks, Mae, and Henrik; and a sister-in-law, Verna Helgeson, of Lake Mills; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris, in 2011; five brothers, Stanley (Neoma), Harry (Eileen), Kurtis, Truman (Phyllis), and Vernon (Barbara) Helgeson; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Bliss.

Milford’s family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to caregiver Julie Rice and to the Hospice of North Iowa team.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 16, 2016, at Salem Lutheran Church, 401 South Lake Street, Lake Mills, with Pastor Joel L. Guttormson officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Thursday, September 15, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Salem Lutheran Church and will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd Street SE, Mason City, Iowa 50401, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
