FOREST CITY — Alpha Luella Swanson, 98, of Forest City, died on Saturday, November 8, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

(Alpha) Luella Swanson was born in Forest City on October 18, 1905, a daughter of Joseph and Mary (Segerstrom) Lewis. She attended Forest City schools and graduated from Forest City High School in 1924 with a Normal School Teaching Degree.

Luella taught in country schools in Ellington and Mount Valley Townships for seven years, even completing one school year after her wedding.

On December 26, 1931, she married Herman Swanson in Albert Lea, Minnesota. For many years, they made their home on a farm southeast of Forest City. In 1982, they retired from farming and moved into Forest City.

An active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City, Luella taught Sunday school and participated with the Awana Club. She took good care of her family and enjoyed quilting, baking, canning, and looking after her garden, especially her flowers including her violets.

She is survived by her three children: William Swanson, and his wife, Kathy, of Yuma, Arizona, Sharon Curtis, and her husband, David, of Nekoosa, Wisconsin, and Lois Pruett, of Rochester, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

Luella was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman, in 1988; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Edward Gutierrez; a granddaughter, LuDawn Curtis; a sister, Elsie Olson; and three brothers, Lyle, Russell, and Forest Lewis.

Funeral services for Luella will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Doug Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland [Oakwood] Cemetery in Forest City. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, at the church and continue until the time of the service.
