January 03, 1924 - May 15, 2016

U.S. Veteran

Edison Harlan Meland, age 92, of Lake Mills, died on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Edison was born on January 3, 1924, in Lake Mills, to Knute and Tillie (Leidal) Meland. His grandparents, John and Emma Leidal helped raise both Harlan and his baby brother after the death of their mother in 1934. Harlan was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church and, in later years, truly accepted the Lord as his Savior.

After attending and graduating from Lake Mills High School, Harlan went on to attend Waldorf College in Forest City. He worked at the Cool Springs Canning Company and for the Iowa Conservation Commission at Rice Lake before joining in the military.

Inducted into the United States Army at Camp Dodge on March 25, 1943, Harlan served in Europe during World War II. On March 31, 1946, he was honorably discharged at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. Returning to civilian life, Harlan was employed as a police officer with the Lake Mills Police Department, worked for the Wilson Packing Plant in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and sold insurance for the American Republic Insurance Company.

On August 12, 1958, Harlan married Viola Montgomery Counley in Rockford, Illinois. They lived a number of years in Wisconsin before returning to Lake Mills. Viola passed away in 1988.

He was proud of his over fifty year membership with the Otto/Chose Post #235.

Survivors include his brother, Tilman Kermit Meland, of Henderson, Nevada; a half-brother, Richard Meland, of Low Moor, Iowa; a step-daughter, Linda Solsrud, and her family of Forest Lake, Minnesota; and a dedicated friend, Richard Ward, of Lake Mills; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Knute and Tillie (Leidal) Meland; his wife, Viola; his special grandparents, John and Emma (Sevley) Leidal; and a step-son, Dennis Counley.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 26, 2016, at the Salem Lutheran Cemetery with Pastor Steven Bang officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Otto Chose Post #235 of Lake Mills.
