Mavis Lorraine (Davidson) Thorson, 82, of Leland, Iowa, passed on Sunday, February 01, 2015, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Mavis, a daughter of Minnie (Varland) and Olin Davidson, was born on April 23rd, 1932, on the family farm in Thompson. She graduated from Thompson Community High School in 1950 and then attended Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC), now the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). After graduating from ISTC, Mavis taught country school until she married Robert Thorson on May 30th, 1954, at Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa. They enjoyed forty-nine years together. She felt extremely blessed to have been a twelve year cancer survivor.

Mavis loved her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with her children, reading, sewing, doing genealogy research, quilting, and actively participating in her church, the local community, and the Lutheran World Relief charity. She always looked for the best in everyone and every situation. She could inspire with her words or simply her smile and positive attitude. A kind person, she was always willing to help anyone in any way she possibly could.

Mavis is survived by her daughter, Mary, and son-in-law, Joe Consamus, and their children, Jamie and Maria, of Ames, Iowa; her sons, John, and daughter-in-law, Stacy, and their children, Anja and Addy, and John’s children, Joshua, Jessica, and Jennifer, of Mazeppa, Minnesota; James, and daughter-in-law, Anna, and James’ children, Seth, Todd, and Tyler, and Anna’s children, Samantha and Bart, of Leland, Iowa; Michael, and daughter-in-law, Teresa Tsang, and their son, Christian, of Vancouver, British Columbia; two sisters, Delores Knudtson and Lois Ann Lembke (Valdean); and her sister-in-law, Gloria Davidson; aa well as by many loved nieces and nephews

Mavis was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, David; her granddaughter, Sarah Jo; and her brother-in-law, Robert Knudtson.

She will be dearly missed by everyone she ever met as she, undoubtedly, touched many lives in a positive way. Her family will miss her the most, but we are relieved at the end of her suffering and believe she is in a better place.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM, Thursday, February 5, 2015, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland, Iowa, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Wednesday, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at West Prairie Cemetery in rural Leland, Iowa.

Her family would like to suggest that memorials be made to Alzheimer’s Research or to Lutheran World Relief.
