Harold Norman Arthur
(November 17, 1921 - May 25, 2009)

Surrounded by his children, U.S. Veteran Harold Norman Arthur, 87, of Lake Mills, Iowa, passed away on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2009, at Comforts of Home in Hugo, Minnesota.

Harold was born on November 17, 1921, to Olai and Clara (Rasmusson) Arthur on their farm at Williams, Iowa. Later, his family moved to rural Forest City, and he, consequently, graduated from Forest City High School.

During World War II, Harold enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. While stationed in New Jersey, he married his sweetheart for life, Sybil Heimdal Arthur, at Asbury Park, New Jersey, on June 23, 1944. Then, he spent the next year on board ship transporting troops to the European Front. As his ship was just entering the Panama Canal moving to the Pacific front, the war ended.

Harold and Sybil farmed in the Hanlontown and Joice areas before moving to Lake Mills in 1991. His friendly personality and eagerness to visit with those he came in contact with bespoke of his love of God, family, and country. Quick with a smile and a hug, he truly loved people.

Harold saw spring time as very special as he loved to plant and nurture things to grow. He, particularly, enjoyed geraniums and his many violets, which bloomed year round. Indeed, he greatly enjoyed showing off his violets.

Harold is survived by his daughter, Ellen Johnson, of Shoreview, Minnesota; his son, John, and his wife Karen, of Coralville, Iowa; and his grandchildren: Rick (Anne) Wood, of Mahtomedi, Minnesota, Brandon (Brooke) Wood, of Moundsview, Minnesota, Matthew Wood, of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, Rodney Arthur, of DeKalb, Illinois, Christopher Arthur, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Damon (Kelly Voss) Arthur, of Superior, Colorado, and Kjersten (Nick) Koenigs, of West Des Moines, Iowa; and six great grandchildren: Jake, Jordan, Kennedy, Grayden, Cashen, and Vada; his sisters- and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Jim Tweeten, Carole and Vern Hagen, and Paul and Sylvia Heimdal; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife; two sons, Don Michael and Rodney Dean; his sisters, Mildred Moen, Ruth Stairs, Clara Hipp, Adelaide Foss, and Carmen Arthur; and his brother, Kermit Arthur.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 29, 2009, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor W. Paul Weeg officiating. Burial will take place at Beaver Creek Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lake Mills. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 28, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

If you are considering making a donation in Harold’s memory, the family suggest they be made to the Beaver Creek Cemetery or Hospice of the Lakes, 8100-34th Ave S., Minneapolis, Minnesota 55440
