Ruth Helen Carlson
(March 19, 1923 - January 1, 2015)

Ruth Helen Johnson Carlson passed from this life on Thursday, January, 1st, 2015, at the Lake Mills, Iowa, Care Center. She was born to Hjalmar and Helen Johnson in Bode, Iowa, on Monday, March 19th, 1923.

While raising three sons, she worked as the railroad depot agent in Kensett for a number of years. She also served as a Cub Scout Den Leader, working with some very energetic young boys.

When her sons went off to college, so did she. Ruth graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Master’s Degree. She was certified as a Special Education Teacher and taught for twenty years. After retiring, she wrote a book, Cin---ger--ella, about her experiences as a teacher. In addition, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for forty-two years and a long-time member of the Sons of Norway.

Ruth loved playing the clarinet, traveling all over the world, and teaching her grandchildren how to read and write. She also enjoyed admiring fine gems, refinishing antique furniture, and playing with her dog, Trooper.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Hjalmar and Helen Johnson, her brother, Harold; her sister, Lila; and the father of her sons, Eugene Carlson.

She is survived by her oldest son, John (Mary), of Lake Mills, her middle son, Norman (Janet), of Windsor Heights, and her youngest son, David (Chong Son), of Mililani, Hawaii; three nieces, Pamela Grotegut, Margaret Johnson, and Rochelle Johnson; one nephew, Rick Riker; seven grandchildren, Sarah Lopez (Joseph), Larry Carlson (April), Kathleen Maris (Marc Paltrineri), Benjamin Carlson (Ann Cornelius), Krista Carlson (Dave Brnilovich), Martin Carlson (Caroline Ane), and Erik Carlson; and four great-grandchildren, Dylan Lopez; and Simon, Sophia, and Theodore Carlson.
