(September 17, 1936 - January 27, 2015)

Donald J. Borey, 78, of Joice, Iowa, died on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa.

Donald James Borey, a son of Edward and Alice (Carlson) Ortenstone, was born on September 17, 1936, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from Minnetonka High School, received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota, and earned both his Master’s and Specialist’s degrees from Mankato State University.

On July 19, 1958, Don married Jeannine Benson in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. To this union, four children were born. In their earlier years, the family made their home in the Twin Cities where Mr. Borey taught 3rd and 4th grades in Mound, Minnesota.

In 1972, the Boreys moved to Lake Mills, Iowa, and later to Joice, Iowa. Mr. Borey served as the Elementary and Middle School principal at the Lake Mills Community School until he retired in 1998, having worked with many teachers and students through the years.

Don knew what he treasured in life and did his best to reflect those values of faith, family, and community on a daily basis. At Bethany Lutheran, he served in various capacities including as president of the church council and as a member of the music ministry. He enjoyed playing cards, camping, and vacationing with his wife and children. The Mayor of Joice for several terms, he also participated in community theatre and sang with various music groups in the Lake Mills area. In addition, he found time to play tennis and tackle ongoing remodeling jobs at the family’s turn-of-the century old home.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannine Borey, of Joice, Iowa; his children, Carol (Jeff Farmer) Borey, of Bellevue, Nebraska, Christopher (Jody) Borey, of Des Moines, Iowa, Craig (Kirsten) Borey, of Redwing, Minnesota, Charles (Janice) Borey, of Grant City, Missouri, and Jon “Uc”(Tu) Lee, of Oregon, Ohio; his grandchildren: Jessica, Temperance, Thea, and Isla Borey; Alyse (Anthony Aiken) and Dilan DeVries; and Jared and Jana Harding; a great-grandson, Charlie Donald DeVries; and a brother, Richard Borey, of San Antonio, Texas; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Alice; his step-father Roger Borey; and his brother, Ronald Ortenstone.

If desired, for memorial contributions, the family has designated the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood, Iowa, or Bethany Lutheran Church, Joice, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, Iowa, with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Inurnment will be at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, rural Joice. Visitation will be from 2:30 until 4:00 PM at the church on Saturday.
