Dawn Marie Westrum
(September 30, 1968 - December 3, 2014)Surrounded by her family, Dawn Marie (Ellingson) Westrum, age 46, of Rake, died on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa, after losing her battle with cancer.
Dawn was born in Austin, Minnesota, on September 30, 1968, to John and Linda (Lacore) Ellingson. She had three sisters, Wendy (Dawn will want the record to show Wendy as the oldest), Michelle, and Samantha. Baptized in Albert Lea and later confirmed at Salem Lutheran church Lake Mills, Iowa, where she attended Sunday school, Dawn graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1987. On Jan 23, 1993, she married Karl Westrum at Salem Church in Lake Mills. Karl and Dawn shared many happy memories, but their daughters, Amanda and Jessica, brought them the most joy.
Dawn loved her life as a dedicated wife and mother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and she, especially, loved the holidays, always looking forward to the peanut butter ball treats at Christmas. Her hobbies included collecting coins and felt art work. In addition, she was the lead singer of Mandarin Orange (her family Rock Band group). From 1987 to 1997, she worked at Universal Circuits, Inc. (UCI) in Lake Mills (now Dielectric Corporation — Iowa). After her family moved to Rake, she found her calling as a dedicated Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the Timely Mission in Buffalo Center where she worked for over twelve years. She found that job very fulfilling. Although she loved the people she worked with, she loved helping the residents even more.
Those left to honor and cherish her memory include her husband, Karl Westrum; her daughters, Amanda Ellingson (Rob Goetz) and Jessica Westrum; her mother, Linda Ellingson; her sisters, Wendy (Kris) Haugebak, of Thompson, Iowa, Michelle (Steven) Aukes, of Box Elder, South Dakota, and Samantha (Derek) Friest, of Mason City, Iowa; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews as well as great nieces and great nephews.
Dawn was preceded in death by her father, John Ellingson; her father-in-law, Gary Westrum; her maternal grandparents, Evelyn (Ordean) Oakland and Raymond Lacore; and her paternal grandparents, Esther (Lawrence) Ellingson. We miss you Dawn.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Peter Soli officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 until service time at the church on Saturday. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Salem Memorial Cemetery in rural Lake Mills.
