After attending cadet nurses training in Portland, Oregon, she graduated as a Registered Nurse. She worked in a number of hospitals before joining the Sister KENNY team during the polio epidemic in the late 1940s.

There, she met George Dobrovolny, her future husband. They married at North Emmanuel Church in rural Pelican Rapids in 1947 and were, subsequently, blessed with two children. After her wedding, she worked at several hospitals before bringing her career to a close working as a school nurse the final eight years.

Vivian loved planning and going on trips, listening to music, especially violin music, gardening, reading, sewing, and walking, but most of all, she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Always very active in church and in ladies organizations, she participated with the American Legion Auxiliary as well.

Those grateful to have shared in her life include George Dobrovolny, of Buffalo Center, her husband of sixty-seven years; two children, Tim Dobrovolny, and his wife, Cindy, of Southlake, Texas, and Debby Garst, and her husband, Gary, of Buffalo Center; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Lindsay Dobrovolny, of Brooklyn, New York; Christina Dobrovolny, of Southlake, Texas; Katherine Dobrovolny, of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Matthew Garst, and his wife, Sheryl, of Council Bluffs, and their children, George, Audrey, and Morgan; Mark Garst, and his wife, Jill, of Lakota, and their children, Bailee, Ezekiel, and Franklin; and Carmen Criddle, and her husband, Ryan, of Chatfield, Minnesota; two sisters, Marcelle Nelson, of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, and Helen Ann (Harlan) Haugrud, of Rothsey, Minnesota; and three sisters-in-law, Joyce Sillerud, of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, Phyllis Kroeger, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mildred Boen, of Barnesville, Minnesota; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Erik Andrew Dobrovolny; one sister, Eleanor Redal; and four brothers, Byron, Jerome, Curtis, and Donald Sillerud.
