Richard "Jeff" Van Slyke
November 27, 1949 - August 4, 2014Richard "Jeff" Van Slyke, 64, of Forest City, died from natural causes on August 4, 2014, at his home.
Richard "Jeff" Van Slyke was born on November 27, 1949, in Mason City, Iowa, a son of Richard and Shirley (Reynolds) Van Slyke. He attended school in Clear Lake, graduating in 1968. He, then, enlisted in the United States Army and served with the Green Beret Special Forces, Company C Airborne Ranger 75th Inf. 173rd Airborne Brigade RVN, from 1968-1971. He earned the following decorations: Outstanding Trainee AIT, Expert- M14 & M16, National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation for Heroism, and the Army Commendation for Meritorious Service. After he returned from the service, he furthered his education at Waldorf College in Forest City.
Jeff enjoyed fishing, camping, experiencing the outdoors, writing poetry, and playing with Vanessa. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Teresa Van Slyke, of Forest City, Iowa; his children, Alyson (Thomas) Finley, of Des Moines, Iowa, Jesse Van Slyke, of Mason City, Iowa, Eli Wood, of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Vanessa Van Slyke, of Forest City, Iowa; two grandchildren, Phelan and Lochlan Finley; his mother, Shirley Van Slyke, of Ankeny; and his sisters, Lisa Van Slyke (Mike Handy), of Pinehurst, Texas, and Jeri Tracy, of Des Moines, Iowa, as well as by several nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Van Slyke.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., at the Petersen Lund Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark St., Forest City, Iowa, with a time for sharing memories at 6:30. Cremation has taken place and Inurnment will be at a later date.
