FOREST CITY - Darlene M. Larson, 90, of Forest City, died on Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Darlene Mae Larson, a daughter of Melvin and Eliza (Johnson) Hill, was born on May 14, 1924, in Kanawha. Baptized into the Methodist faith at the Kanawha Methodist Church, she attended a rural school near her home and graduated from Corwith High School in 1941. She furthered her education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She, then, started working at the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. in 1942.

On July 18, 1943, Darlene married Robert Larson of Crystal Lake at the Kanawha Methodist Church. To this union a son, Larry, and two daughters, Patricia and Twyla, were born. In 1944, Robert joined the U.S. Navy. Darlene worked as a secretary at Lampert Yards in Kanawha while Robert was in the service. They farmed in the Forest City area until 1973. From 1970 to 1986, Darlene and Robert delivered motor homes for Winnebago. They spent several winters at Laughlin, Nevada, and enjoyed trips to Hawaii and Anchorage, Alaska, while seeing much of the United States. In 1994, Darlene began working at the Lodge Restaurant in Forest City. She also drove a shuttle bus for the Winnebago Grand National Rally for many years. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's programs and sports events as well as having coffee with friends and neighbors. She was an avid fan of the Hawkeyes, Vikings, and Twins.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Forest City and United Methodist Women.

Darlene is survived by a daughter-in-law, Liz Larson, of Aurora, Illinois; two daughters, Patricia Hanson, of Adel, and Twyla Stenzel, of Forest City; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Dan) Lammers, Melissa (Joe) Murphy, Nicole Hanson, Krystal (Mike) Walker, Jessica (Jason) Meyer, and Tommy Stenzel; her great grandchildren, Parker Murphy, Madison Lammers, Brenna Murphy, and Ben Lammers; three sisters-in-law, Clara Hill, of Coal City, Illinois, Connie Hill, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Darlene Thompson, of Crystal Lake; and a brother-in-law, Junior Larson, of Crystal Lake; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert, in 1991; her son, Larry Larson; a sister, Myrna Hill; and her brothers, Mervin and Darold Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with Rev. Charles Layton officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Monday, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 North Clark St., Forest City, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
