Myrtle C. Erickson
(December 24, 1927 - August 23, 2014)

Surrounded by her family, Myrtle C. Erickson, 86, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Saturday, August 23, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society care center in Forest City, Iowa.

Myrtle was born on December 24, 1927, to Earl and Anna (Konichek) Ward, in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, where she was raised and graduated from high school. On August 6, 1948, she married Manise (Pete) Erickson. To this union five children were born.

Myrtle and Peter spent their early married years in Prairie du Chien. Following the birth of their fifth child, however, they relocated to Joice, Iowa, later settling in Lake Mills. Once the children entered school, Myrtle worked first at Compact in Lake Mills and later at Land O’ Lakes in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

First a member of rural North Prairie Lutheran Church and then of Salem Lutheran in Lake Mills, Myrtle actively participated in the circles at both churches. She enjoyed spending time with her family, doting on her pet cats, Calico, Missy Anna, and Polly, traveling, and baking, often searching out and trying new recipes to share with others. In her retirement, she and Peter traveled to Alaska and Hawaii and moved their home to Mission, Texas, for many years, enjoying new found friends and year round sunny weather before moving back to Lake Mills to be closer to family.

Myrtle is survived by Peter, her devoted husband of sixty-six year; her children, Rob Erickson, of Becker, Minnesota, Echo (Richard) Ochoa, of Mason City, Iowa, Dawn (Kevin) Dirksen, of Columbus, Indiana, Terry Stillings (Russell Butler), of Forest City, Iowa, and Susan (Robin) Bennett, of Mason City, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Brandon and Daniel Erickson, Joshua Hagen, Matthew and Stefan Dirksen, Christopher and Brandi Oberg, and Alexander and Parris Bennett; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ellen Tyler and Betty (Leland) Rutter, both of Janesville, Wisconsin; and her sisters-in-law, Lorna Ryder, of Hartford, Wisconsin, and Florence Erickson, of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Clara Ward; her sister, Mary Strauman; and her brothers-in-law; Kenneth Strauman, Laverne Ryder, Joe Tyler, and Bart Erickson.

Following cremation, the family will gather for a private memorial service. Inurnment will be at Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills, Iowa.
