George Wempen Sr., age 96, of Buffalo Center, died on Monday, May 26, 2014, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

George Albert Wempen, a son of Diedrich (Dick) and Grace (Adams) Wempen, was born on August 20, 1917, on a farm north of Buffalo Center. He attended and, then, graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1937. On July 22, 1946, he married Irene Thompson in Blue Earth, Minnesota. They were blessed with six children, Duane, Dale, Eugene, Rodney, Diane, and George, Jr.

George loved his cows and the milk check that arrived every two weeks. He loved farming with his orange machinery. After he and Grace moved to Buffalo Center in 1983, he took up woodworking. He valued his family and friends and always had time for both whether they were watching basketball games, going fishing, attending church events, or just visiting. Having received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at age fourteen, he was, then, baptized and became a member of the First Baptist Church. He attended the First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center his entire life.

George is survived by Irene, his wife of sixty-seven years, and their children, Duane, and his wife, Trish, of Stratford, Iowa, Dale, and his wife, Janet, of Fairmont, Minnesota, Eugene, and his wife, Diane, of Humboldt, Iowa, Rodney, and his wife, LeAnn, of LuVerne, Iowa, Diane, and her husband, Gary Boyken, of Titonka, Iowa, and George, Jr., and his wife, Jennifer, of Buffalo Center, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren, Chad, Ned, Kevin, Laurelee, Dave, Jody, Chad, Derek, Bradley, Ryan, Stephanie, Ashley, Abbi, Diedrich, and Coy; and his step grandson, Nathan; twenty-eight great grandchildren; and three step great grandchildren; as well as by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Amos, William, and Harry; his sisters, Margaret Sonnenberg and Esther Grimes; and his granddaughter, Alicea Wempen.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Winter Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, May 29, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Steve Ware officiating. Burial will take place at Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be directed to KJLY Radio or to Gideons International.
