Vera Marie Ruiter
April 17, 1925 - December 10, 2013FOREST CITY- Surrounded by her family, Vera Marie Ruiter, 88, of Mason City, formerly of Forest City, died on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.
Vera Marie Ruiter, a daughter of Edward and Marie (Schazer) Gelner was born on April 17, 1925. She grew up on a farm by Fertile. On January 29, 1946, she married Willie Ruiter at St. James Parsonage in Forest City. In March of 1946, Vera and Willie started farming near Belmond. They later moved to a farm by Fertile in March of 1947, and after spending many years there, they bought a farm by Forest City in 1967. They enjoyed farming with their children Byron, Jack, and Debbie. Eventually, however, they moved to Mason City where they resided for many years.
Vera enjoyed living on the farm, taking care of the dairy cows, tending to her garden and beautiful flowers, and cooking for her family. She appreciated hard work, never complained, and was always thankful for what she had.
Vera and Willie enjoyed ballroom dancing and often frequented the Surf Ballroom. She also loved shopping at the Village General Store, and she stored all the treasures she found through the years in her house. She enjoyed the time she spent with her family and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include Willie, her husband of 67 years; her son, Byron, and his wife, Barb Ruiter, of Forest City; her daughter, Deb, and her husband, Jeff Claussen, of Blaine, Minnesota, and her son, Jack, and his wife, Marie, of Northwood, Iowa; her grandchildren, Patrick and Cindy Ruiter, of Mason City, Jason and Jacob Claussen and Amanda (Chris) Shromoff, of Blaine, Minnesota, Emily (Barnes) Toresdahl, and Timothy (Andrea) Stumo; and her great-grandchildren, Lillian Vera Ruiter, Ivy Toresdahl, and Calan Stumo; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Dennis; her sisters: Geneva, Lucy, and Dorothy; and her grandson, Charles Ruiter.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 12:00 P.M., Saturday, December 14, 2013, at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Dennis Miller and Rev. Paul Lippstock officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 North Clark St., with a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. Interment will take place at Immanuel Reformed Cemetery in rural Belmond, Iowa.
