Daisy Kiewiet
(January 13, 1914 - December 13, 2013)

Daisy Kiewiet, age 99, of Buffalo Center, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

The oldest of six children, Daisy, a daughter of Nathan and Lora (Rhoer) Abbott, was born on January 13, 1914, in Webster City, Iowa. She graduated from Webster City High School in 1933. After high school, she moved to Buffalo Center to join a high school friend, Ann Tapper. Throughout her career, she worked at many different retail businesses.

She married Vernon Kiewiet on October 16, 1937, and to this union, four children were born: Carolyn, Carlyle, Betty June and Bill. Throughout their married life, Vernon and Daisy farmed, milked cows, and owned the Pure Oil Company gas station. After Vernon passed away on September 16, 1972, she moved to town.

Daisy had many hobbies. She enjoyed quilting and gave each of her twelve grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren a baby quilt she made when they were born. She made the last quilt in 2011 for a great grandchild. Daisy also loved embroidering. She made thousands of dishtowels for all four children and all the grandchildren. No one ever left from a visit without some embroidered dishtowels. She also enjoyed bowling, golf, crafts, visiting the nursing home, and attending the Women’s Fellowship.

She is survived by her children; Carolyn Ruggles, of Des Moines, Iowa, Carlyle (MaryLee) Kiewiet, of Forest City, Iowa, Betty June Sifuentes, of Spring, Texas, and Bill (Sharon) Kiewiet, of Mason City, Iowa; her grandchildren: Jeff (Joanie) Ruggles, of Fort Collins, Colorado, Julie (Randy) Gamble, of Winterset, Iowa, Jay Ruggles, of Des Moines, Iowa, Joy (Wes) Riihl, of New Richland, Minnesota, Rich (Brenda) Kiewiet, of Dumas, Texas, Arthur Sifuentes (fiancée Jamie Crowe), of Spring, Texas, Sandy (Russell) Haydel, also of Spring, Texas, Steve Sifuentes, of Forest City, Iowa, Joe Sifuentes (Jean Henning), of Fertile, Iowa, Justin Kiewiet, of Littleton, Colorado, Gretchen (Jody) Wynia, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Nate (Maggie) Kiewiet, of Leawood, Kansas; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her sister, June Algoe, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Deb Abbott, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her brother- and sister-in-law, Todd and Ethel Kiewiet, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, and her brother-in-law, Lloyd Kiewiet, of Buffalo Center, Iowa.

Daisy was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; her parents, Nathan and Lora Abbott; her brothers, Chester (Kris) and Dale Abbott; her sisters, Ruth (George) Johnson and Helen (Daryl) Zenor, her brothers-in-law, Henry (Lenora) Kiewiet, Jacob (Ruby) Kiewiet, Wilbur (Marge) Kiewiet, and Carl (Betty) Kiewiet; her sisters-in-law, Charlotte (Donald) Bennett, Lillian (George) Beaving, Gwen (Ted) Cohen, and Harriett Kiewiet; her nephews, Mike Algoe and Mike Cohen; and her nieces, Sharon Zenor and Karen Engleman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, December 20, 2013, at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Brad DeVries officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2013, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center and one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
