Baptized at home on January 30, 1930, by Truman Benson and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake, Iowa, on June 18, 1944, he grew up on the family farm southeast of Rake and graduated in 1949 from Rake High School.

Norman married Virjean Thorland on January 20, 1951, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They were, subsequently, blessed with four daughters, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, all of whom will cherish his memory always.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Maedell; and an infant brother, Gerald; as well as many other loved ones.

A very caring, hardworking, and honest man, Norman loved his Lord, his family, his church, and his community. Indeed, he served them all in many ways. He was active in the Lions Club for over twenty years, and he served as the President of Zion Lutheran Church, President of the Young at Heart Club, and the Thompson Senior Center. As a teen, he worked hard on the family farm. He loved basketball and played on the Rake High School and the Rake Town teams.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa, with Rev. Boyd Longshore of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will take place at Zion/West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, rural Thompson.
