Marilyn Samuelson
September 5, 1931 - August 28, 2013

FOREST CITY - Marilyn Samuelson, 81, of Forest City, died Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

Marilyn was born on September 5, 1931, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to the late Maynard and Alice Olsen. She played the great bass fiddle in high school band. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1949, she married the late David H. Samuelson on August 28, 1953.

Marilyn worked at Egekvist Bakery in Minneapolis and Pioneer Seed Corn in Algona, served as President of the Swea City, Iowa, Library Board and played instrumental role in creating a new library building, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, worked as a leader in the Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls, and served with Pastor David Samuelson at several churches throughout the Mid-West.

Marilyn always enjoyed fossil hunting with her husband, David. Together they traveled to Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Texas as well as to several archeological sites in the Mid-West; to the Yucatan Peninsula; to Greece, Instanbul, Turkey, the ancient Sea Port of Ostia in Italy, and to Rome where they had a personal audience with Pope John Paul II at Vatican City.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Paul and Joel Samuelson, both of Lincoln, Nebraska, Karl Samuelson, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Gloria Doyle, of Waukee, Iowa, and Laura (Mark Hawks) Samuelson of Urbandale, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Nichole (Hunter) Flodman, Matthew (Jenna) Samuelson, Andrew Samuelson, Ian Miller, Ingrid Miller, Erin McGohan, Claire McGohan, Adam Hawks, and Jeremy Hawks; three great-grandchildren, Ethan Samuelson, Nolan Samuelson, and Alec Flodman; her brothers, Jerry (Muriel) Olsen, of Richfield, Minnesota, and Paul (Pat) Olsen, of Bloomington, Minnesota; her son-in-law, Kurt Miller, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; her cousins, Alice Naslund and Janet Subject, William, John, and James Kallestad, and Jeffrey Optiz; and her nieces, Suzy Haeg, Kirsten Jacob, Maria Olsen, and Karin Dykstra.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Samuelson; her parents, Maynard and Alice Olsen; her daughter, Cynthia Miller; her granddaughter, Hannah Doyle; her son-in-law, Brian Doyle; her brother, Thomas; her aunts, Agnes and Margaret Olsen; and her cat, Freya.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 5, 2013, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Co-Inurnment with her late husband, David Samuelson, will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter at 11:00 AM, Monday, September 9, 2013. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services, at the church.
